Vancouver Birth Doula, Raquel Feswick

If you’ve landed on my website, you likely already know a little bit about doulas. I’m Raquel Feswick and I’m a DONA trained Vancouver birth doula in the lower mainland and tri-cities area.

While browsing my site, make sure to check out what my past clients have said about me and find the answers to some commonly asked questions about doulas.

Enjoy your look-around!

I am planning on birthing at home. Do I really need a Doula?

Yes. Often, midwives join you at home once you are considered in “active” labour. I arrive in early labour to make sure that you’re eating/drinking/resting, to assist with coping techniques, and to use my rebozo (traditional Mexican shawl) and knowledge of birthing positions for optimal fetal positioning and relaxation if necessary.
The benefits of doula support include:
  • Shorter labours
  • 34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience
  • 31% decrease in the use of Pitocin
  • 28% decrease in the risk of cesarean section
  • 12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
  • 9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief including epidurals
  • 14% decrease in the risk of her newborn being admitted to a special care nursery
  • Greater success with breastfeeding
  • Lower risk of postpartum depression

Birth isn’t just about making babies; birth is about making mothers. Strong, competent, capable mothers who know their inner strength.
